2025 Undergraduate Scholarship Winners Updates

Kelsey Garrity, 2025 Scholarship Winner

“My first year of college has been amazing so far, and I’ve really loved getting involved both academically and on campus. I’m currently studying Biochemistry & Molecular Biology/ Biotechnology, while earning a minor in pharmacology and toxicology. During my short amount of time here, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to research in the Zhang Lab, where we apply engineering principles to cerebrovascular physiology to better understand brain function. In the lab, I’ve been using advanced imaging along with cellular and molecular techniques to study neurovascular signaling in mouse models during natural behaviors, which has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

Outside of research, I recently started working at the Breslin Center, which has been a great way to stay connected to campus life. This semester I also began volunteering at Sparrow Hospital in the neuroscience unit. These experiences have really helped me grow and adjust to campus life, and I’m excited to continue building on them.”

Arrington Ward Jr, 2025 Scholarship Winner – First-year business management student attending North Carolina A&T State University

“During my time in college, I have met amazing people I consider close friends, excelled in classes where I received a 4.0 GPA, and met so many people. The fall semester was great, at first it was hard to differentiate academic life and personal life, but in the end, you’ll get the hang of it. The fall semester seemed like yesterday. Regarding the spring semester, it’s been very fast. I can’t believe in two weeks I’ll be taking my final exams and heading home. The spring semester is going to be the hardest semester by far. But I have an amazing support system and great professors, and I have been able to continue my efforts of being in high academic standing. I love my college, and I’m glad I chose an HBCU.

I would like to thank the Library of Congress Federal Credit Union for selecting me as a scholar, as it alleviates financial stress and burden for paying for college. This message is to future applicants: please apply! Apply to this scholarship and any others you see, and make sure you have fun in your senior year; it’s going to go by quickly.”

Updates from our 2024 Scholarship Winners

Melanie Jones, 2024 Scholarship Winner

“My first year at Vanderbilt has been an exciting and rewarding journey, filled with opportunities to grow academically and personally. As a double major in Culture, Advocacy, and Leadership and Human Organizational Development, I’ve been able to engage deeply with my studies while exploring my interests outside the classroom. One of my favorite memories so far was attending the Vanderbilt vs. Alabama football game, where we unexpectedly won and got to storm the field and take down the goal post, such an unforgettable experience! I’ve also had the chance to get involved in organizations like The Nashville Food Project, Pi Beta Phi, and Dore for a Day, which have allowed me to connect with others and contribute to causes I care about. In addition to my campus activities, I’ve had a blast exploring Nashville with my friends, discovering new spots and making lasting memories. Overall, my first year has been filled with personal growth, meaningful growth, and unforgettable connections.”

Samuel Sharp, 2024 Scholarship Winner

“I’ve had an incredible first year at Syracuse and feel very fortunate to be part of the Whitman and Falk College communities.

Academically, I’ve maintained a 3.95 GPA while pursuing a dual major in Sport Management and Finance. I’ve also become actively involved in several campus organizations. Through the Syracuse Sport Group, I’ve worked on NIL campaigns with athletes and brands, gaining hands-on industry experience. I’m also a member of the Sport Management Club, where we raised over $59,000 for Rescue Mission through our annual charity auction. In terms of my experiences outside of Falk, I’m involved in TAMID, a business organization that connects students with Israeli startups, and I’m currently participating in the Goldman Sachs Possibilities Summit, a year-long professional development program.”
