Overwhelming debt can cause enormous stress, including anxiety and depression. Whether it’s overspending, a salary reduction, or emergency expenses eating away at your savings, we have five tips to help you overcome debt stress.
- Talk Openly. If you’re depressed or anxious about money and your budget, don’t keep it to yourself. Millions of other Americans are feeling the same way you are. Talk to a financial professional or someone you trust who is financially savvy about your debt. By discussing the issue, you may find that you feel a bit better about it and more importantly learn strategies to help whittle your debt down. If you prefer anonymity, consider Debtors Anonymous. Visit debtorsanonymous.org or call 800.421.2383 for a meeting near you.
- Be Open to Perspective. Are you healthy? Do you have family, friends, and loved ones? Focus on the good things in your life. Optimism can make a difference in taking the actions and steps needed to work toward positive changes.
- Get Active. Do a full review of your finances, including expenses and any savings, investments, and/or insurance. Having a big picture view of your finances and having conversations about it is the first step to working toward a solution that works best for you. Remember, even making small changes can help overcome the debt and reduce your stress. Fight the urge to shop for things you don’t need. Additionally, throw out credit card offers as they arrive. - Be Confrontational. Don’t hide from bill collectors. Regain control by answering their calls. Just be calm, rational, and friendly. Explain your situation and ask for help to remedy the situation as part of the Fair Debt Collectors Practices Act.
- Prioritize Spending. There are likely some expenses you can reduce or cut to help pay off your debt and reduce some anxiety. Review your budget and do what you can. Separate your expenses by wants (streaming services, new electronics, etc.) and needs (food, housing, insurance, etc.). Look for ways to cut items in your “wants” category.
